The idea for this shoot has been brewing for some time. As a senior portrait photographer it is important to me to capture teenagers and their interests. I get a lot of calls from kids who are accomplished pianist and want their senior pictures taken with a piano but a piano is not an instrument that can easily be loaded into a car and brought to a session. Not to mention that if we do find a piano to use, it’s usually in a dark church or bland looking stage. So my search began for a baby grand piano that I could use whenever and however I wanted. I love concepts that are out of the box and surprising so why not take a baby grand piano and photograph it in a meadow or in a lake? After a month of searching Craigslist and talking to several piano teachers I found Jason @ Enterprise Piano Service. I explained that I was looking for a baby grand piano to purchase but wanted all the insides taken out so it was light enough for me to haul around. He was a little confused at first that I wanted to purchase a piano that could not be played but once I explained what I was doing, he was great and helped me make my idea a reality. My first shoot on the piano was this model shoot. We got access to use a friends property by the Yakima river and created the set the night before wrapping the piano in a giant tarp for the night. The next morning it was pouring rain. Nothing like a little added stress the day of a big shoot. We moved forward with hair and makeup by Gaylyn’s Salon and headed out to the location. Miraculously the rain stopped and it turned into a perfect day for a shoot! Thank you to all my models. You did an amazing job!
